The need for more sports fields for organized sports

By Cathryn B. "Cassie" DeYoung

Candidate for Member, City Council; City of Laguna Niguel

This information is provided by the candidate
Our city has an inadequate number of fields available for organized youth sports and we need to build new fields now.
Our city needs to build more sports fields so that we can accomodate the needs of our youth sports organizations (like AYSO soccer, Little League and Girls Softball.) We have a significant shortage of fields now that will only become worse in the next 10 years, according to the Parks & Recreation Master Plan that was presented to our City Council in June of this year. I feel it is critically important to keep the youth of our Community involved in organized sports. My experience as a deputy district attorney, prosecuting gang members and drug crimes, has taught me that children that are involved in organized youth sports are kept on the right track. We need to make every effort to keep the young people of our city on the right track.

We also need to find creative solutions to this field shortage problem. One solution is to enter into joint use agreements with Capistrano Unified School District so that we can build fields at local elementary schools in Laguna Niguel (such as Moulton Elementary) and through an active partnership both the city will benefit, in that new fields will be built, and the School District will benefit because they too will be able to use the new fields and this will enhance their PE programs.

In addition, we need to build more fields on the sites available to our City, such as the La Paz site. This site could accomodate two sports fields. In addition, the city needs to explore other potential opportunities, such as a joint use agreement with neighboring cities so that we could use fields already built in other cities. I would also propose that we explore the possibility of joint use agreements with elementary schools in the Capistrano Unified School District that are located in cities near Laguna Niguel.

My experience as a Planning Commissioner and an Environmental Review Board Member will be a great asset as your Council Member in making these critical decisions, and I ask for your vote on November 3rd. Thank you.
