Qualifications to serve as a Board Member:

For the last 13 years I have served as a member of the Board of Trustees of the Tustin Unified School district. During this time, I have devoted between ten and twenty hours a week as a Board Member. I believe that Boards of Education are supposed to be lay policy-makers for the educational system of a community. As representatives of the community, the individual members should bring to the board a wealth of broadly based and individual experience in all of the areas the Board deals with along with education, including finance, business, and personnel matters. It is very important for Board members to be deeply committed to public education, but I also believe that it is important to preserve a system of checks and balances and to have board members who bring more than just experience in education. Therefore, I believe that my training and experience as a tax attorney who interprets statutes and analyzes both numerical and factual data is valuable. I also believe the fact that I am open minded and very able and willing to listen to all segments of community helps me be a better representative.

My vision for the district is to make sure that we have strong academic curricula, that assures every student to chance to reach his/her full potential and to make sure that the district is run in a businesslike manner.

The TUSD school board has made many positive changes in the last few years. These include:

Implementing rigorous academic standards and curricula;

Reducing all K-3 class sizes;

Insisting on phonics based reading instruction;

Managing enrollment growth by opening or reopening four new schools, fought against the sale of Redhill, Guin Foss, and Lambert;

Successfully establishing a fundamental/GATE school of choice;

Continuing a successful English only policy;

Conservatively managing an 80 million dollar per year budget while maintaining a healthy reserve;

Listening to the community by encouraging widespread involvement on Citizen Advisory Committees;

Supporting youth sports by implementing a joint use policy for playgrounds and fields.

I am running because I want to see this positive momentum continued.
