How to improve the Schools & the School System

By Andrew Aames

Candidate for Governing Board Member; Garden Grove Unified School District

This information is provided by the candidate
Students should be able to walk to school, or attend school close to home. Reading & writing skills need to be improved. School food should be more nutritious. More advanced math classes should be available. Learning should be exciting and fun. English and foreign languages can be easily learned via the reading method, not via boring grammer drills. School safety should be a priority too.
The Federal government has recently informed us that diesel fumes are toxic; Yet the Garden Grove Unified Schools still insist on massive bussing of students. There have been a number of serious bus accidents. Students have been injured. Schools close to home should be expanded so that students are not required to ride long distances every day in busses, unless they so choose. Maybe some new schools are needed.
Practice makes perfect. English and foreign languages can be easily learned through reading. New honors programs are needed to encourage students to read at least one book every week, in addition to all other schoolwork. Participation in these honors programs should be voluntary; Those who choose to participate in the new honors programs would agree to spend no more than 7 hours per week watching TV, watching movies and playing video games; For each book that they read, they should write a brief book report.
School foods should be more nutritious, and more breakfasts should be available. Math instruction should be more advanced, and include more word problems.
Better school safety is needed; According to Superior Court Papers, the following allegations/problems have recently occurred in the Garden Grove Schools:
At one high school, students have been bringing weapons to school because they are afraid of the 'skinheads'. At another high school, there was a high-speed-car-chase which resulted in an innocent student's serious head injury and six month coma. At a middle school, a 12 year old girl was removed from campus, taken to a motel, and raped. At another school, a nail gun kept in a shop class caused a student's serious injury. There should be absolutely no guns on campus, and no nail guns either. Safety must be paramount.
Thank you all for your support and your votes.
