Mark Salvaggio was first elected to the Bakersfield City Council in November, 1985. As a Council member Mark has served on numerous committees including: Personnel, Community Services, Water Resources and Legislation. He is Chairman of the City of Bakersfield's Water Board and has served as the Council's representative to the Kern Council of Governments (Kern COG).

Mark is a "hands on" Council member. He has been the leader in the continued development of the Kern River Parkway. He spearheaded ordinances to keep adult bookstores away from schools and churches and sexually explicit materials from the view of youngsters.

Mark has opposed excessive fees or increases on businesses and homeowners. He believes in open government and fought to open Council Committee meetings and the budget process to the public. Our Councilman has been out front in the areas of hazardous waste management, regional transportation planning and protection of the City's Kern River water rights.

Mark Salvaggio takes his Council duties seriously. He is the only Council member who has never been disqualified from voting due to a "conflict of interest" or missed a regularly scheduled meeting in over 12 years.

Mark holds a BA and Secondary Teaching Credential from California State University, Bakersfield. He is an educator and has both public and private sector experience as a Junior High School teacher and in sales.

Mark's populism, non-partisan approach and commitment to "open government" have earned him the reputation of a citizen-councilman. His stands against official perks and government waste and bureaucracy have won him respect across the political spectrum. Mark is perceived as a fighter and an independent voice for people and their neighborhoods.
