Candidate for Member of City Council; City of Shafter

Cathy Prout
A Proven Leader
Dedicated to the Future

As one of your City Council Members, I have worked hard to make Shafter a community to be proud of. I have served on the Council during a challenging period in our history, when most small cities have experienced severe hardship and have doubtful futures. I am proud to say that we have improved our financial position and our future is full of excitement and hope.

I have not stood idly by and watched the world change around us without taking action to give you, the citizens of Shafter, the things you need and want from your city government. I do not just talk about change or things that should be accomplished, I roll up my sleeves, work hard, and take informed and positive action. You have relied on me to be involved and to carry through on my commitments. I have listened to your concerns and have aggressively championed those concerns for the betterment of all of Shafter. My work on the City Council has made a difference and I'm very proud of it.

Following are some of the accomplishments I'm most proud of being a part of:

  • Started the Shafter Visions and Strategic Planning process involving more than 3,000 of our residents.

  • Annexation of the Shafter Airport area.

  • Annexation of the International Trade and Transportation Center (Foreign Trade Zone).

  • Competed for and obtained a State of California Enterprise Zone.

  • Some of the new industry, jobs and opportunity are Elk Corporation, Helena Chemical, Wilbur-Ellis, Code Precast, and Gary Drilling will be moving to Shafter soon.

  • Competed for and received a $1,600,000 grant to provide for street, water and sewer construction that will encourage future development in our industrial parks.

  • Increased our police department from ten sworn officers to sixteen.

Many of these accomplishments, such as creation of our redevelopment areas and having a State Enterprise Zone are important tools that many communities do not have. You, the citizens of Shafter have told me you want job opportunities for your children and you want the quality of life in Shafter to improve. These tools are necessary and set us apart from other small communities to create jobs and improve our community.

We are at a turning point in our history. I have worked hard for you to get to this turning point and I look forward to continuing this work. I'm excited about the work we have done on the Council and the future of this great community. With your help, we can fulfill our vision and make Shafter one of California's premier cities.

Pursuing our vision while preserving our values
