Statement of Candidate for Member of City Council City of South Lake Tahoe

Bill Crawford Age:64 Occupation: Retired Teacher

Education and Qualifications: I have lived in the city for 31 years where I taught public school for 25 years. I have a B.A. and Masters degree in Social Science. Based on my studies of city audits, I believe the main issue is the city's long term debt of 130 million dollars that requires about a 5 million dollar debt payment annually. To keep the city solvent the debt must not increase. Mamagement of city business must be frugal and free of more borrowing. The city's debt has been created by its Redevopment Agency which is not accountable at the ballot box to city voters. There have been two redevelopment bankruptcies in less than 10 years. Presently, there is talk on the city council about more borrowing, more debt that would lead to the city's financial ruin. A vote for me is a referendum to stop the borrowing and the creation of more debt. Other issues include resolution of the airport dilemma, mismanagement in the city manager's office, and the use of 700,000 dollars of promotion money. I will not play favorites. I will be accessible to all citizens. A vote for me is a vote for open, honest city government.
