Tutition reduction, as proposed by the incumbent Gray Davis, does not go far enough in reducing educational costs to students across class and race lines. Books and other educational materials are cost prohibitive for many students. I would therefore propose legislation that would require colleges and universities to operate not-for-profit bookstores to offset the cost to poor and low income students. As a voting member of the State Job Training Coordinating Council, I would ensure that all Californians have equal access to both traditional and occupational education to allow them to succedd in the growing global market. In addition, I would work with private business to offer greater scholarship opportunities to students who are beginning college later in life. Students over the age of 35 who are seeking to improve their marketability or are looking for a career change, have little access to financial aid. Yet, their contributions, work history, maturity would add a great deal to any work environment. |
