Fighting High-Tech Crime

By Jose L. Salcido

Candidate for Sheriff

This information is provided by the candidate
"The high-tech industry is a major reason we enjoy the thriving economy we do in Santa Clara County. We must focus on those criminals who target the high-tech industry."
Currently, we don't understand the magnitude of high-tech crime. A computer crime is reported as a commercial burglary. The property is listed as if the theft occurred out of a warehouse and the information is listed among the thousands of commercial burglaries that occur county wide.

I will track these crimes separately from other commercial burglaries. Did the crime occur from an electronics company, retail store or during transportation of high tech equipment? Did the property taken consist of computer chips, computer units, software and/or intellectual properties? Can we identify the underground market that is purchasing this stolen equipment, making it profitable for the criminals stealing it?

Law enforcement needs to improve its ability to obtain information from security personnel so that we can better coordinate our efforts. We have information regarding a suspect's prior arrests and can link similar crimes occurring in the computer industry. I will improve relationships with security personnel thus enhancing law enforcement's ability to do its job.
