Correctional Facility & Sub Stations

By Gary Holder

Candidate for Sheriff

This information is provided by the candidate
CORRECTIONAL FACILITY: Our Humboldt County correctional facility staff has some 26 positions unfilled; these should be filled. There should be an emphasis on "correctional" in this new facility, because nearly every inmate there is returned to this communty. Correctional officers and program staff can make a huge contribution to public safety; without them, we simply have a jail and jailers, which are well documented as contributing little to long term public safety. Correctional officers who have attended the basic academy should be hired as a deputy if they qualify, and have a desire to become a deputy sheriff.

SUB STATIONS: I believe our Humboldt County Sub Stations are understaffed. Sheriff's Sub Stations should have a Correctional Officer to handle the people arreasted and free up deputies for their own primary work in investigation and apprehension of criminals. They should have Lieutenants and Sergeants for leadership and a staff adequate to respond to public needs. Reorganizeing our departmental structure and personnel for responsiveness to public needs throughout the County will be one of my top priorities.
