Full Biography for Louis D. "Louie" Bucher

I’m a Humboldt County native who attended local schools and graduated from Humboldt State University. I’ve been a teacher, counselor and school administrator. Nothing is more important or rewarding to me than helping our children get the knowledge and skills they need for success.

Our county’s schools and students have accomplished a lot in the last four years. Test scores are above state and national averages, and dropout rates are on a downward trend. Ninety-eight percent of our elementary schools have reduced class sizes, and there’s been an effective effort to improve school safety and expand classroom technology.

Still, the need for quality education has never been greater. We must provide our children with learning opportunities that will serve them well into the next century. As your county superintendent of schools, I am committed to helping our schools meet the challenges ahead. My priorities for the next four years will be to:

• Lead and support local efforts to improve teaching and learning;
• Improve communications between schools and our community;
• Maintain fiscal integrity in school operations;
• Help our schools put new state and national reform measures into practice; and
• Advocate for local control of our schools.
