Detailed Biography for T. R. (Tom) Chambers

This information is provided by the candidate

I was born in Glendale, California and lived most my childhood in Anaheim, watching it grow from a sleepy town of 13,000 people into the major suburban area it is now. In high school I was interested in the extra-curricular as well as the academic aspects of school, participating on the golf team and being active in the local YMCA. Part of my YMCA experience was twice representing the local Y in Sacramento in the Youth in Government model legislature program.

In college I remained active in extra-curricular activities, participating in both intercollegiate sailing and crew teams. Academically I enjoyed physics (how the world operates) but also liked economics and ended with sufficient coursework for majors in both fields. Upon graduation the military draft was calling. I wanted to make the best of my military career so I applied to and was accepted by the Navy Officer Candidate School in Newport, Rhode Island.

In the Navy I developed my management skills as well as gained experience working with technologically advanced systems. I was the Supply Officer aboard a nuclear submarine, was in charge of Aviation Support aboard USS Enterprise, and gained experience serving civilians as well as military as Executive Officer of the local (Oakland) regional office of the Navy Exchange and Commissary system.

In 1991 I decided to retire from the Navy, seeking increased geographic stability plus opportunities to serve in the local community. I obtained my teaching credential in Math and Physical Science through a program at San Francisco State and completed my student teaching at Lowell High School in San Francisco. Four years ago I was selected to a full time position in the Mathematics Department at Lowell and have also been serving as sponsor for the Class of 1998.

Just prior to retiring from the Navy I became aware of a vacancy on the Board at Westborough County Water District and was nearly appointed to fill that vacancy. Unfortunately my military status prohibited me from serving although I learned a great deal from the process. I have continued to follow the activities of the District and look forward to working with the other Boardmembers to provide reliable and efficient water and sewage service.
