Political Philosophy for Lorianna Kastrop

This information is provided by the candidate

As this is a non-partisan office, I am not promoting a particular political philosophy in my campaign.

As a business owner, I am very conservative with the finances of my firm, and I intend to bring that fiscal expertise to the school board in dealing with tax dollars. In this time of escalating construction costs, it is critical that the new school facilities be completed quickly and on budget.

I believe that the School District can do a better job communicating with and including parents in the education of their children. I would start by publishing the curriculum standards that have been established for each grade level. I would work to enhance those standards. I also feel that there are many misconceptions in the community regarding the nature of the magnet school program. Improvements can be made in publicizing the many choices and benefits available in the Redwood City schools.

I would bring my parent participation preschool experience to the board to promote inclusion of parents at all levels, but especially in the classroom.

As an active member of the Chamber of Commerce, I would work with the local business community to promote flex-time for parents and other volunteers to donate their time to the Redwood City schools. I will also continue to promote school-business partnerships.

When new libraries and multi-purpose rooms are completed, I would like to create after-school programs at all school sites. These could include fine arts, performing arts, athletics, homework centers, etc. It would be necessary to have the support of the entire community to make this a reality. I feel that my diverse community contacts would be helpful in launching such an ambitious project.

Many concerns regarding education in the school district can be addressed by looking at the needs of the individual child and working with that child's family to provide appropriate educational choices. Making families a part of the success of their children is fundamental to my philosophy. The School District needs to welcome and provide opportunities for working parents, and other parents who are not currently active in the school system to become more involved.
