Detailed Biography for Jane Williams

This information is provided by the candidate

I have lived in San Mateo for 15 years. I started my business here, taught in the high schools, volunteered in social services, and cheered my goddaughter as she was inducted in the sports hall of fame right here in San Mateo. In short, like you, I make my home here and intend to grow old and retire in San Mateo. All of this has given me a passion for San Mateo and a passion for service to its people.

I served on the Human Resources Commission for 8 years, two years as Chair, and chaired the Citizens Review Committee that mediated residents and service provider problems in San Mateo. I have 13 years management experience in business and social services. In my work for Stanford University I specialize in being a change agent, helping people prepare for change, understand change and adapt to change.

I have an extensive background in project development and evaluation, managing complex budgets and resources. I’m an active board member for my Home Association which has had enormous success recently in making significant improvements to our community. I welcome opportunities to use my skills in service to the people of San Mateo.

As a member of the City Council, I will help shape San Mateo’s future by making strategic choices today. I’ll promote neighborhood empowerment, citizen access, and broader participation in city government. I’ll push for balance in the needs of businesses and residents, homeowners and renters, employers and employees. I’ll work for sustainability, promoting those elements that sustain our economic growth without jeopardizing our future. Today’s high density housing development should not become tomorrow’s traffic nightmare.

We will get the type of city, community, neighborhood we are willing to build. The choices we make today affect the quality of life we will live tomorrow. I’m passionate about working with you, the citizens, to build the type of city we want and deserve.
