Official Ballot Statement

Statement of JIM ROBERTS, Candidate for
                        City Council Member, Seat 3
   Occupation: Vice Mayor/Businessman
   Age: 33
   Education and Qualifications:

Bachelor's Degree Economics (high honors), UC Riverside
Master's of Business Administration (honors), Santa Clara University
   Graduate of Leadership Sunnyvale
During my first term as your Vice Mayor and Councilmember I have
worked hard to improve the quality of life for Sunnyvale citizens.
Over the past four years I have sponsored and supported legislation
which has resulted in more public safety officers on our streets,
expanded parks and recreation services, and the remodeling of our
library. I am proud that this service expansion has occurred while
maintaining my commitment to fiscal responsibility. In fact, our
budget and 10 year Resource Allocation Plan have been balanced for
every year I have been in office.

In addition to improving and expanding city services, I have
maintained my hard line against new high density housing projects. I
stand firm in my commitment to protect the integrity of our
   neighborhoods.

While our city government has been successful in meeting the
challenges of the past four years, the future holds new threats to our
quality of life. Our new challenge is to balance the demand for
industrial and commercial intensification with the limits of our
transportation infrastructure. The current economic climate makes it
very profitable for developers to tear down one story
industrial/commercial buildings and replace them with 4 or 5 story
buildings. If we allow this to occur throughout our city, we will have
gridlock on many of our major city streets.

While a strong local economy is critical to our quality of life, we
cannot allow it to grow disproportionately with our ability to handle
the increased traffic it creates. We must strike a balance which
allows for a healthy economy within the limits of our transportation
   system.

I was born in this city and have lived here my entire life. Like you,
I have a vested interest in making sure Sunnyvale remains a model
city, and is the kind of place in which we all want to live. During my
next term I will continue to fight to improve our quality of life, and
maintain the suburban environment which gives Sunnyvale its charm.

I look forward to serving you for another term, and respectfully ask
for your vote on November 4.
