"JULIA MILLER, - CANDIDATE SPEECH for Channel | 18 KSUN."
Julia Miller

This information is provided by the candidate

If you think the best candidate for City Council is determined by the amount of money raised or the most brochures in your mail box, then I may not be your candidate. If you believe the most qualified candidate should have a track record of community leadership, service and experience required to make important decisions as your council member, then I urge you to vote for me: Julia Miller, Council Seat 2.

I entered this race on my own credentials to represent you -- to listen to your views and concerns and be your Champion to take SV into the 21st century. I have the time and energy to do this job. I love Sunnyvale and will serve your needs without any obligations to anybody.

I served 4 years on the Housing & Human Service Committee; four years on the Personnel Board, and was elected Chair of both. I'm a Leadership Sunnyvale Graduate, served six years on its Board of Directors, two years as President of the Alumni Association, and was past President of my homeowner's association.

As a Loaned Executive to United Way I know the community needs regarding housing, child care, transportation and services for seniors.

As a congressional staff associate in Washington, D.C., I know how the Federal government works and how to get support for Sunnyvale.

As a business administrator for a large corporation and an Ambassador for the Chamber of Commerce, I understand the roles of large companies and small businesses, both vital to provide our tax base.

These qualifications give me the level and depth of experience needed to solve problems Sunnyvale will face. You deserve strong leadership to make tough choices. I am that strong leader. I get involved, seek solutions, resolve issues, and get things done!

  • We must prevent encroachment of high density housing in our single family home neighborhoods, and maintain the character of our suburban environment.
  • I support maintaining Moffett AirField as a Federal facility. I oppose air cargo and general aviation. Sunnyvale needs to have a plan in place that ensures we decide how the land will be used if Moffett becomes available.
  • I will support a ballot initiative that allows you to vote on Moffett's future use. Your council denied you this right.
  • I want to start council meetings earlier to provide you better public access.

I have lived in Sunnyvale for 39 years, attended Sunnyvale High, DeAnza and San Jose State. I worked here, am a homeowner and raised my son Jason here, and have been involved in all his youth activities.

The major distinguishing factor in this race is the level and depth of experience the candidates will bring to the Council. This level and depth of experience is the key to being an effective council member. I have this experience -- and I urge you to compare my experience with the limited experience of both of my opponents before your vote.

I want to be your voice on the Council. Please vote for the most qualified candidate -- elect Julia Miller. Thank you.
