                Statement of GERRI L. CARLTON, Candidate for
                           Governing Board Member
   Occupation: Incumbent/School Nurse
   Age: 49
   Education and Qualifications:
   During my eight years on the Los Altos School Board, we have
   creatively addressed our challenges by working with the community. We
   have
     * listened to each school community as we addressed exploding growth
       issues;
     * worked with the City of Los Altos and field user groups to provide
       improved fields for school, recreation, and community use;
     * worked with families from the "Old Mill" site to include them in
       our school community;
     * addressed needs of families speaking 26 languages in our schools.
       
   "Listening" and "community" have made us successful without adding
   additional administration costs. We are fiscally sound, and
   accountable to the community with the annual "District Report Card."
   Our nationally normed test scores are at record high levels, but
   exciting challenges face the Los Altos School District!
     * How do we organize the expansion of our schools and integrate "401
       Rosita" as a community resource?
     * How do we solidify technology to enhance the curriculum?
     * How do we maximize our National Science Foundation grant into
       hands-on, stimulating science lessons?
       
   We must continue to resist educational "fads." Our dynamic curriculum
   is successful. Our primary goal must be to continue providing a
   challenging, focused, high quality curriculum.
