Political Philosophy for Guadalupe Arellano

SAFETY:

  • Intervention, prevention and reinvention are three strategies that I will use to bring peace to our neighborhoods. Education is a key part of successful crime prevention. It is why I co-founded and managed La Isla Pacifica battered women's shelter and did police and community education. I believe parents, educators, students and police are partners. We can find a common ground to make Gilroy a safe place.

    GROWTH

  • Growth should be planned deliberately to conserve resources, to minimize waste and to create public spaces that are socially inviting. Gilroy is our home not just a grid of houses, commercial building and development acreage.

    SCHOOLS

  • Schools prepare our future leaders. We must help Gilroy's youth to become caring citizens. As a Planning Commissioner I am aware that a growing community faces complex issues with regard to crowded schools. As a council member, I will work with the school district to find effective solutions.

Gilroy is at a crossroads. It is growing beyond a small town. The General Plan Update, which will bring Gilroy into the next millennium, needs to reflect our town's new size and diversity. I was born in Gilroy. My husband and I are raising our two daughters here. Like you, I have great hopes and dreams for our children and for the town we all call home. I am currently serving on the Gilroy Planning Commission.

As a Council Member, I will continue to work for a safe, prosperous and environmentally sound community.
