Detailed Biography for Guadalupe Arellano

This information is provided by the candidate

I was born and raised in Gilroy. I attended all local public schools and served in the United States Army. I attended Gavilan Jr. College and the School of Professional Studies at the University of San Francisco.

I am currently serving on the Gilroy Planning Commission. I am a member of the commission because I believe that Gilroy is not just houses, parks and sidewalks. I know it is people, businesses, schools, friends, and it is my home town. My parents owned Pepe's restaurant, which was enjoyed by Gilroyans for over 17 years. This business background taught me that Gilroy must encourage the development of new businesses and clean industries as well as nurture those we now have.

I have worked and volunteered in many capacities to keep Gilroy safe and to maintain a solid quality of life. I worked for the City of Gilroy as a Teen Coordinator creating programs for our youth. I believe that we must continue to focus on our children in order to help make them caring citizens of the future. This requires that the City and our School District maintain a solid partnership. As manager and co-founder of La Isla Pacifica battered woman's shelter I educated South County residents and police officers about domestic violence and its overall affects. In this capacity, I saw first hand the affects of violence on our families, children and community.

I was a member of the committee that organized our first Community Peace Summit, which was targeted to help find solutions to the growing violence we face each day. I was instrumental in bringing a program called "PeaceBuilders" which has made a difference in Salinas, our neighbor to the south. I have embraced a way of Life that reminds our children of the Golden Rule. "PeaceBuilders" brings back the fundamental tools of respect, honor, civility and pride in one's self and community. With this program I have planted a seed that is now being embraced and nurtured by many in or schools and community.

My husband, Roberto and I are raising our two daughters, Daniella (7) and Deborah (4) in Gilroy and we care about our neighborhood, our schools and our entire community. Like you, I have great hopes and dreams for our children and for the town we call home.
